Outdoor Learning

posted Feb 28, 2015, 10:21 AM by Red Rock

Ms. Frovold (4th grade teacher) and Mrs. Morris (1st grade teacher) proposed an idea for an outdoor learning facility here at Red Rock.   First, they provided us with a background of how the idea came about.  They explained that because Mrs. Donnelly (K teacher) won an award last year, the school had an opportunity to apply for a $100K grant. The grant proposal that was put together was for an outdoor learning facility.  The school didn't get the grant, but the teachers that were involved in the process haven't given up on the idea to make it happen. The problem lies in that the proposal was a "pie in the sky" idea based on a large amount of funds available. Now, with questionable funds available, the proposal has had to basically be rewritten back to the "grass roots" idea. This would be an outdoor learning area equipped with a sustainable "classroom". There would also be a need of equipment like compasses, butterfly nets, etc.  To bring the idea to fulfillment, they will need parent support.   At this point they are most interested in forming a parent committee that would be willing to help plan and implement the project.  They are also looking for parents who have connections within the community that may be able to help with grant writing and supplying donations.  The teachers understand that with the looming budget cuts, the timing is not great.  However, because of the benefits for our students, they are still pursuing it.  It would also be a positive thing for the school and students to focus on.  Here is a brief summary of the benefits outdoor learning provides:

A designated outdoor learning center can enhance the value of classroom learning. Researchers reference outdoor learning as helping develop active citizens and future stewards of the environment. Research supports outdoor learning spaces crediting them for increased student engagement, improved achievements and attendance, improved attitudes, and stimulated creativity. Studies show that outdoor learning can help tremendously improve student’s personal, emotional, and social wellbeing. Many parents feel there is a great need in our school community for our children to “unplug” from technology and get back to the basics. This means, learning and playing outside.

If you are interested in being on the committee or being involved with the project, please contact, Kim Macynski (PTO president), ckmacynski@comcast.net.  Thank you.

Dear Parents,

The Red Rock Elementary PTO is comprised mainly of parent volunteers.  We are here to help parents, guardians, teachers and faculty work together to provide the best elementary experience we can for our students.  Our mission is to provide students, staff, and parents with the financial and volunteer support to enrich our learning community.  Fundraising is our primary way of supporting our mission.

Thank you to the parents that were able to attend our first PTO meeting of the 2014 school year.  Please know that everyone is welcome at all of our meetings which are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Media Center.  A list of upcoming meeting dates can be found in your parent handbook and on the Red Rock website.  Our September meeting focused on the PTO budget and funding.  The PTO is being asked to fund about $40,000 worth of expenses this year and our budget reflects these requests.  That means we need all of your financial and volunteer support.  We fundraise through a variety of ways throughout the year including the pledge drive, carnival, pancake breakfast and book fairs, just to name a few.  These are all fundraisers where we are asking parents for their financial support, but there are many other fundraising opportunities that do not.  We would like to spot light one now:

http://www.target.com/tcoe
Do you shop at Target? If you are a Target REDcard holder (debit card or credit card) you can designate Red Rock Elementary to receive a donation from Target equivalent to 1% of all your purchases! To identify Red Rock Elementary to receive donations based on your REDcard purchases, go to www.target.com/TCOE or call 1-800-316-6142. Not a Target REDcard holder? Call that same number or visit that same website to enroll and start saving 5% of all your purchases while earning money for our school . Remember to ask grandparents and other relatives to identify Red Rock on their REDcard accounts too. Thank you to the 135 families that have already designated Red Rock on their REDcard account which resulted in over $6,000 being donated last year! Questions about the program or the enrollment process can be directed to Red Rock's REDcard Coordinator (lindamk@comcast.net).

We hope you will consider helping us support our amazing school!  You can find out more about the PTO including volunteer and fundraising opportunities by visiting www.redrockpto.org.  Please join us for our next meeting on Tuesday, October 21 when Carla Larsen, Media Specialist, will present “Online Resources & Digital Citizenship (online safety and behaviors)”.
